Could You Love A Computer?

It’s not often that you find a cool song that also alludes to the philosophy of artificial intelligence. This track by Australian indie band, Scraps, contains the following lyrics:

‘What would they say if they found out you’re nothing but a computer.
Not capable of loving and feeling just like a human.
I don’t care I would love you the same.
Touch your buttons and print out your name.’

I enjoyed the song and the video, which apparently is set in Mount Cootha botanic gardens. But I’m not sure that, like the singer, I could love something that I knew was an inanimate object with no feelings or emotions of its own. I think that to love intelligent machinery it would have to be intelligent in the right way. Of course no one knows what ‘in the right way’ means just yet.
